The Hispaniola docks in the nearest port in the Spanish America and the crew are ashore getting supplies and some extra crew members.
Ben Gunn is left on board and Long John Silver is chained up below. Silver has manged to pick the lock on his chains and makes his way ashore making sure Ben sees him.
When the crew return to the ship Ben tells them that Silver has got away and good riddance to him, the captain and crew agree.
Unknown to them during the night before they set sail back to Bristol Silver climbs back on board with his own supplies and hides in a covered long boat on deck alone with a bag of gold he has stolen from the treasure hoard some four hundred guineas.
It is as the ship passes the old navigation marker in the tidal port of NAIL in the SEA showing that the port of Clevedon is 5 miles past and the port of Bristol but 8 miles away that silver slips over the side and jumps ship for a new start on the island of NAIL in the SEA.
