Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Colonial Building, an iconic structure in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador.

This short puzzle will quickly get you the coordinates of the cache itself, which is very near to the Colonial Building.

The cache is located at N 47° 34.ABC' W 52° 42.DEF', with A to F being found by reading the passage below and doing a little research.

The Colonial Building was constructed to be the home of the Newfoundland government and the House of Assembly in the mid-1800s. The design style is neoclassical, and the building was constructed of white limestone specially imported from Little Island, Cork, Ireland.

On May 24, 184E, the cornerstone was laid by the Governor, Major-General Sir John Gaspar Le Marchant.

At the time of construction, Alexander Pindikowski, a Polish fresco painter, was serving a 1F-month prison sentence for forgery. Pindikowski received a one-month reduction in his sentence for the immaculate fresco painting work he completed at both Colonial Building and neighbouring Government House.

The official opening of the Colonial Building took place on January A8, 1850, by Governor Le Marchant for the second session of the House's fourth general assembly.
The House of Assembly met here from that opening date in 1850 up to July 28, 19B9.

The Colonial Building provided a backdrop for some of the most significant events in the history of the province.

On April 5, 19D2, a huge public protest concerning maladministration and corruption in government turned into more of a riot.  All the windows of the Colonial Building were broken, doors smashed and furniture destroyed.  The Prime Minister, Sir Richard Squires, barely escaped the building at that time.

The building was also the site of Newfoundland's first bank robbery, in 18C0.  The Newfoundland Savings Bank was located in the basement of the building, and the bank was robbed of £413.

The Colonial Building received a major restoration beginning in 2009. One of many interesting parts of the restoration process is the reinstatement of a small tower on the apex of the building.  This tower was likely removed prior to 1860 due to leaking.  The tower is actually a skylight.  With the Colonial Building being restored to its original 1850 appearance, the renovators have reinstated the "lantern tower" on top of the building.  If you click on the picture in the description below a weblink takes you to a CBC article showing before and after pictures of the tower being replaced, and within that article you will also find several other links to stories regarding the full restoration of what is arguably the most important building in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Check your coordinates in the checker below, then off to the Colonial Building you go!
