Базальти відносяться до виливних магматичних порід. Всі виливні магматичні породи, створюються в результаті застигання магми на поверхні землі або під водою. Ці породи залягають у вигляді суцільних покривів, лавових потоків і жил.
Назва «базальт» походить від латинського basaltes, basanites, від грецького basanos – пробний (або основний) камінь; за іншою версією базальтами вони стали від ефіопського basal – камінь, що містить залізо. Базальти називають ще стародавнім шведським словом Трапп.
Мінералогічний склад базальту. Під мікроскопом спостерігається склад, що аналогічний більш глибинному габро. Базальт включає олівін, авгіт і польовий шпат (плагіоклаз). Хімічний склад. SiO2 45-52%, Al2O3 15-18%, Fe3O4 8-15%, CaO 6-12%, MgO 5-7% і ін.
Базальти зазвичай мають колір від сірого до чорного. Але у вологу погоду його поверхня стає від коричневого до іржаво-червоного (бурого) кольору. Це відбувається через окислення багатих на залізо мінералів (мафітів) і перетворення їх в оксиди і гідроксиди заліза (гематитів). Через погодні умови або високої концентрації плагіоклазу деякі базальти можуть бути світлого кольору і нагадувати адезіт.
Через свою твердість та зносостійкість базальти знаходять застосування в будівництві, в першу чергу у вигляді бруківки на дорогах. З розплавленого базальту виготовляють волокна та жаростійкі будівельні матеріали.

Because of their hardness and wear resistance, basalts are used in construction. Fiber and refractory building materials are made from molten basalt.
UA: Як правило, базальти видобувають у кар'єрах відкритим способом. В Україні є кілька родовищ базальту. Одним з таких унікальних місць є родовище чорних базальтів в районі Янової Долини. Це мальовниче місце знаходиться в заплаві річки Горинь в Рівненській області. Друге родовище знаходиться поблизу в районі села Берестовець.

Сад каменів це не великий сквер площею 0,35 га, що спроектований у формі вітрила. Сквер прикрашають високі стовпи з базальту та кілька колон з штучних матеріалів. На деяких колонах і гранітних каменях можна побачити бронзові скульптури. Окремою частиною композиції Саду каменів є великий гранітний фонтан діаметром 11 метрів. Скульптурні композиції Саду каменів створені ужгородським скульптором Олексієм Шамшуром .
