Geocache Description:

市堀川は1586年に和歌山城の外堀として造られた川で、当時は『堀川』と呼ばれていました。
その後1916年に県の告示で『和歌山市堀川』とされ、さらに1926年に市の統計書で和歌山が省略されて『市堀川』と記載され、そのまま『市堀川』が正式名称となりました。

現在は和歌山市民からは『いちぼりがわ』と呼ばれていますが、正式には『しほりがわ』とされています。
