The history of the Hipodrom district began thanks to the Austro-Hungarian military garrison, the second largest in the Empire, after Vienna. The exclusive area of the army was between Jungerwald Strasse (Calea Dumbravii) and Rotenturm Strasse (Vasile Milea), which included several barracks, military warehouses and a huge Exerzier-Platz (training ground). The cavalry had a real hippodrome (racecourse) here.
After 1918 the area remained a training ground and hippodrome, which survived until the early 1960s.
Since 1965 begin the construction of the largest district of Sibiu - about 50,000 people.

Istoria cartierului Hipodrom a început graţie garnizoanei militare austro-ungare, a doua ca mărime din Imperiu, după Viena. Zona exclusivă a armatei era cea cuprinsă între Jungerwald Strasse (Calea Dumbrăvii) şi Rotenturm Strasse (Vasile Milea), care încadra mai multe cazărmi, depozite, magazii militare şi un imens Exerzier-Platz (teren de instrucţie). Cavaleria avea aici la dispoziţie un adevărat hipodrom.
După 1918 zona a ramas câmp de instrucţie şi hipodrom, care a supravieţuit până la începutul anilor '60.
Din 1965 începe construirea celui mai mare cartier sibian - aproximativ 50.000 oameni.

A Hipodrom negyed története az Osztrák-Magyar katonai helyőrséggel kezdődött, amely a bécsi után a legnagyobb volt. A hadsereg exkluzív területe a Jungerwald Strasse (Calea Dumbravii) és a Rotenturm Strasse (Vasile Milea) között volt. Itt számos laktanya, katonai raktár és egy hatalmas Exerzier-Platz (kiképző hely) létezett. A lovasság számára valódi versenypályáját alakitottak ki.
1918 után a terület edzőpálya és versenypálya maradt, egészen az 1960-as évek elejéig.
1965-ben kezdődött Nagyszeben legnagyobb negyedének építése - itt ma körülbelül 50 000 ember él.
