A reasonably well preserved lime kiln in the Winster Valley
The cache is close to the kiln, which is on a good footpath network giving the opportunity to visit this bit of history, explore the area and visit other caches nearby.
Lime kilns were used from medieval periods right through to the 18th and 19th centuries. They were used for in earlier times for the production of mortar for building purposes. The many kilns that can be found around the South Lakes were used for the production of lime for agricultural purposes. There is an extensive list here.
The cache is a screw top pot. Its not in the kiln or in any nearby stone walls.
