This is a traditional Church Micro multicache, with the final container being situated just a short distance away from the Smalley Baptist Church.
The Smalley branch of the General Baptist movement was an early one, founded in the 1770s - the Church itself was built in 1785. It was originally a joint church with that of the Baptists of Ilkeston. Early baptisms took place in various outdoor locations, including Smalley Dam, and it is interesting to note that the Baptists’ early accounts show purchases of gin and rum – presumably to warm people up after they had come out from a winter baptism! Smalley Baptists were known for their missionary zeal, and this church went on to open off-shoots at Heanor, Langley Mill and Kilburn.
The building has been extended several times, and inside there is still a first-floor galery, though this is no longer used.
To find the coordinates, you need to look at a few gravestones, all of which can be read from the pavement – there is no need to enter the churchyard if you don’t want to.
