Campbelltown gets its name from Elizabeth Campbell, the wife of former Governor of New South Wales Major General Lachlan Macquarie. Development of the town was slow, being located 53 kilometres (33 mi) south-west of Sydney and it wasn't until 1831 that residents took possession of town land.
Campbelltown's most famous incident occurred during this period. In 1826, local farmer Frederick Fisher disappeared. Legend has it that his ghost appeared sitting on a fence rail over a creek just south of the town and pointed to a site where his body was later found to be buried. This Adventure Lab will take you through the CBD of Campbelltown, visiting some of the fine period architecture in the town. You will learn about poor Frederick Fisher and what became of him.
