山形県の最南端「最上川」の源である吾妻連峰の裾野に広がる米沢は、城下町としても知られ、上杉景勝の家臣、直江兼続により藩政の基盤が築かれ、その後、第9代藩主、上杉鷹山の大倹約をもって、苦しかった藩財政を立て直し、その、鷹山の政治信条は、現代の民主主義思想に近いものがあり、今でも注目されています。
自然が豊富な吾妻連峰では、夏山登山やスキーなどが手軽に楽しめ、米沢の奥座敷、小野川温泉のほか、奥州三高湯のひとつ白布温泉、姥湯温泉、大平温泉、滑川温泉、新高湯温泉、五色温泉、湯の沢温泉などの豊富な温泉観光も楽しめます。

Yonezawa City is located at the base of the Azuma mountain range, the source of the "Mogami River", the southernmost point of Yamagata Prefecture.
Yonezawa is also known as a castle town, a vassal of "Uesugi Kagekatsu", the foundation of the clan government was established by "Naoe Kanetugu".after that, With the great frugality of the ninth lord "Uesugi Youzan", we rebuilt the finances of the clan, whose political beliefs are close to modern democratic thought, and still attracting attention.
At the Azuma mountain range rich in nature, you can enjoy summer mountain climbing and skiing easily, and you can also enjoy plentiful hot-spring sightseeing such as Onogawa hot spring, Shirabu hot spring, Odaira hot spring, Namekawa hot spring.
直江石堤（直江堤公園）
直江兼続は米沢に移封後、まちづくりとともに暴れ川だった松川（最上川）の水害を防止するため、総延長10kmにおよぶ谷地河原堤防（直江石堤）と蛇堤を築きました。
蛇堤とは地元の通称で、大小の河原石を横にならべて積み上げる「野面積（のずら）」と呼ばれる、戦国時代の石垣造りの工法です。この工事は下級武士を従え、兼続自ら指揮をとったといわれています。
現在では直江石堤が残る河川敷が公園として整備され、地元の人々の憩いの場となっています。
その一角には散歩コースがあり、道沿いには直江兼続の偉業を紹介する石碑が点在し、歩きながら兼続の生涯をたどることができます。
Naoe stone embankment （Naoe embankment park）
After moving to Yonezawa, Naoe Kaneketsu built a Yachikawahara embankment (Naoe stone embankment) and a serpentine for a total length of 10 km to prevent flooding of the river Matsukawa (Mogami River), which was a rampant river.
At present, the riverbed with the Naoishi embankment remains as a park, making it a relaxing place for locals.
There is a walk course in one corner, and along the road are dotted with stone monuments introducing the achievements of Naoe Kanetsugu, and you can follow the life of Continuity while walking.
