This is another cache on some new trails in the Sandia Mountains. I was exploring these new trails on my mountain bike and came across a map posted on one of the trails. The Forest Service has since published a downloadable map of the new trails in this area. Go to the Cibola National Forest website and search for the "Cienega, Sulphur, and Doc Long Trails" map in PDF format. A low-resolution copy of the preliminary map is attached for your convenience. You will have an idea of where you need to go by looking on the map.
If you take a direct route, the hike is less than 6 miles round trip from the Cienega parking lot. Looking at the map, there are a number of ways to get here. So you can beat feet this way or that way. You can also ride a horse this way or that way, or ride a mountain bike this way or that way. Some trails are still being rerouted and improved; thus, the map may not be entirely accurate as of this date. However, the existing user trails are still in place until the new trails are officially opened. This is a remote area of the forest so muggle activity is very low. Nevertheless, please be aware of your surroundings when retrieving and returning the cache to its hiding spot. Have fun exploring this way or that way.
You can use the Armijo Trailhead to gain entry to this trail system. Access the Armijo Trailhead from the Cienega picnic area. Bring $5 cash, use your annual Sandia Recreation Pass, or use your Interagency Annual Pass for parking.
