An easily accessible cache, as part of a new series around the Valley Lake area.
History of Valley Lake
Formerly a basalt quarry, which was closed in 1976, this huge hole in the ground was the subject of a bitter battle between the Kennett government and local residents. At one stage, approval was granted for this site to be used as a toxic dump, however strong opposition from locals in Niddrie and Keilor East resulted in the decision being overturned in 1999. In 2000, the Bracks Government announced that the site would be used for housing development, with 30% of the land reserved as open space. The first blocks of land were auctioned in May, 2006. Most of the land has now been sold, and new residents have now moved in.
This cache is placed at the junction of the bicycle/walking paths that weave around Valley Lake and Steele Creek.
