The area to the east of this walk/bike trail is known as Burts Bog a.k.a Brookwood Marsh Conservation Area. This is Northampton's only bog and is flanked by Burts Pit and Florence Road. Burts Pit Rd and Burts Bog is named after Gaius Burt who lived in this area in the early 1800's. Legend has it that Gaius Burt led aging farm animals to their final resting place in this area. Although after reading some history I now believe the 'Pit' was added to 'Burts' in naming this road because of Gaius Burts farming the bog for the rich peat moss available there.
The Burts Bog Greenway provides a reacreational path and links three Florence neighborhoods. Burts Bog walk/bike path will serve as the first step to extend walk/bike access all the way to the Manhan Rail Trail near Rt. 10. Yippee !!
