The Wizards are major characters in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. Their title is said to be derived from the archaic word "Wys-ars", meaning one who, at bottom, is very wise.
Wizards (at least the ones of the Unseen University) are described as belonging to one of the eight orders of wizardry, currently named:

The Brotherhood of the Hoodwink (The Hoodwinkers)
The Order of Midnight
The Venerable Council of Seers
The Ancient and Truly Original Sages of the Unbroken Circle
The Sages of the Unknown Shadow

The Last Order (The Other Order)

#4 : Virrid Wazygoose
Virrid Wazygoose was the Archchancellor-elect at the time of the coming of Coin the Sourcerer in Sourcery. While he is preparing for his inaugural dinner. Virrid is killed by Coin's staff (in which is hidden the essence of Coin's father Ipslore the Red) in his relentless hunt for power and revenge. Usually, Archchancellors assume the position after disposing of the incumbent. However, although the fate of Virrid's predecessor is not mentioned it seems likely that Virrid was not involved in his predecessor's death or retirement as it is said that he had been "patiently waiting his turn for years". He is likely therefore a fairly benign figure.
