Geocache Description:

This cache is placed near the site of the Black Diamond Mine that was developed by William Tinker and his five sons in 1916. It is also beside the railway line that now runs to the Takitimu Lignite Mine which is still in operation today.

Tinkertown is now a shadow of it's former self but the adjacent mine is still a thriving business with all of the extracted lignite being transported by rail to the Fonterra Clandeboye factory North of Temuka in South Canterbury and all of the ash that is generated from it's combustion being returned to this site for burial.

The cache is accessed by a public road that is rough but should still be manageable to most vehicles. If in doubt though, you can walk down to the cache site from further up Tinkertown Road.

Please be aware that the railway line is still active and while the cache is near the line, there is no need to go too close to it.

The cache itself is a 400ml Sistema container that contains a log book only but does have room for swaps and TB's. It does not have a pen though so bring one with you! Please return the cache back to it's original site and ensure it is hidden well.
