Geocache Description:

This cache is located near a monument erected for the original owners of the land that the neighbourhood Henry Farm now sits on. Henry Farm was named after Henry Mulholland himself, the farmer that originally purchased the land. The cache is hidden in a tree near the monument. This is an easy find, but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. There is no space for tradeable items. Happy hunting and remember to stop and read about Henry Mulholland!! Congrats to Henry&Co for the FTF!

Jane and Henry Mulholland arrived in Ontario from Ireland in the early 1800s, ready to begin a new life. The Mulhollands began their new life working the land and began to raise a family after settling down. Not long after their arrival, Henry and Jane recieved a land grant for 400 acres in East York, Lots 14 and 15 on Concession 3. (The visual of the lots and their owners back in the 1800s has been attached in this cache's photo gallery) The Mulhollands began their new life on Lots 14 and 15 living in a log house built on a mound on Lot 14, known as "the island" because of its peculiar placement in the East Don River.

In 1812, Henry bought more land, parts of Lots 6 and 7 on Concession 2 in West York. The family moved their and six of Henry and Jane's ten children were born on this new homestead. Henry Mulholland farmed the land, but he also participated in the War of 1812. he was part of the battles of York, Stoney Creek and Lundy's Lane. Along with a neighbour, Henry burned a trail through the forest to the Town of York and dubbed it "Serpentine Road". However, it is now known as Forest Hill Road.

In 1832, Henry made one of his trips back to Ireland, their sole purpose to convince people to come to Canada, borrow money and purchase more land. Sadly, on his return trip home, the Scottish brig "Lady of the Lake" struck a field of ice and sank 250 miles off of Newfoundland, and Henry Mulholland drowned. He was 44 years old. His wife Jane Mulholland continued to live on their Bathurst homestead in West York and died at the age of 66. One of their sons Thomas inherited the Bathurst street farm, which continued to be the Mulholland homestead for over four generations. Their home on Lot 14 and their land on Lot 15 was sold. But the story doesn't end there!

George Stewart Henry was the great-grandson of Henry Mulholland. He was the eldest son of Louisa Stewart, who was one of Mary Ann Mulholland's daughters. Mary Ann herself was the child of Henry and Jane. In 1898, for $14,500, George Stewart Henry purchased the property on Lot 14, Concession 3, bringing the Mulholland property back into his family's ownership. George named his farm Oriole Lodge because of the lack of orange and black orioles. The house underwent an addition in 1900 and a big remodelling in 1912. Oriole Lodge is now a private residence in Henry Farm, and it's just down the street from the cache at 17 Manorpark Court. A street in Henry Farm is called "George Henry", after George Stewart Henry himself. If you are looking for the cache by car, then George Henry is the street you were driving on before you turned onto Manorpark Court! (the street that the cache is located on)

Fun Fact: George Henry was the Premier of Ontario from 1930 to 1934! He was the leader of the Conservative Party.

ENJOY THE HUNT!!
