This geocache is the fourth in the Smoke Rises series and is located in the Kroll, Calder, Larter Pasture property which is managed by the Chelmsford Land Conservation Trust, aka CLCT. The pasture is located on Proctor Road, 2.4 miles south out of Chelmsford Center and just off Acton Rd ( route 27). Parking is on a small grass/gravel area directly opposite #47 Proctor Road, site of the historic Proctor/Artemas Parker c1770 house, a light yellow colonial. Please allow room for a second vehicle to park. PARK ONLY HERE, AND DEFINITELY NOT IN THE PASTURE OPPOSITE THE RED BARN. Ticks can be a problem, especially in the spring, so be sure to check yourself carefully when finished. Starting out for a leisurely stroll on an old cart path between two stone walls will take you very close to the cache.
Surrounded by mid-density residential homes, this beautifully maintained area has several acres of mowed field and dense, swampy woods. It is in a peaceful setting, ideal for bird watching, wildlife viewing, picnicking, and is dog-friendly. The north side of the property borders twenty-five acres of forest - including a horse farm - and old stone walls dot the area.
In my first four visits to this pasture, I saw wild turkeys - one of which was a hen with seven in her brood - a big doe with a fawn, a woodchuck, and numerous birds.
Please treat this area with respect so that others may enjoy it as well.
Within minutes of this Pasture cache - and located within view of the Kates Corner store on Acton Rd (route 27) and Maple Road - there are other geocaches, one being at the picturesque Red Wing Farm and the other, the adjoining Bruce Freeman Rail Trail.
Happy geocaching and stay safe!
