Geocache Description:

I love to quilt! And sometimes Mr QuiltinAnnie helps with the design; figuring out the angles and measurements! This letterbox series will highlight a traditional quilt block or pattern beginning with the letter of the stamp found inside the cache. You will need to supply your own stamp pad.

Honeybee Quilt Block

The Honeybee quilt block dates back to at least the 1840s.  In the early 1800s, as quilters began expanding beyond whole cloth designs, they started with simple geometric blocks like the 4 patch and 9 patch.  This block was pieced using the 9 patch method; with a solid square for the center patch, then on the surrounding 8 patches, the "bee wings" were appliqued in place.  Sometime in the1920s, quilt designers of the time began to use a nine patch (instead of the solid square) for the center square. This pattern was first published in the Kansas City Star in 1929. The square uses both piecing and appliqueing methods.
