Geocache Description:

By definition, a geological contact is where one rock type touches another.

There are three types of geological contact / Existem três tipos de contactos geológicos:

1. Depositional contacts are those where a sedimentary rock (or a lava flow) was deposited on an older rock. Of these you can also have a sharp or abrupt contact or a gradational contact.

Examples of depositional contacts / Exemplos de contactos deposicionais:

1- ABRUPT/SHARP

(Telheiro Beach) - Aungular uncorformity contact between the folded Palaeozoic formations and the horizontal Triassic sandstones. Portugal.

Portugal.

Cretaceous Sandstone overlying Conglomerate. Arenitos Cretácicos deposistados em cima de conglomerados. (Montana, USA)

(Ursa Rock) - Cretaceous limestones. Pedra da Ursa - calcários Cretácicos (Portugal)

2- GRADATIONAL / GRADUAL

2. Intrusive contacts are those where one rock has intruded another

3. Fault contacts are those where rocks come into contact across fault zones.

Normal Faulting in the Cutler Formation near Arches National Park, USA.

To validate your find in this EC, please answer the following questions:

At the cache coordinates, you will see an easily identifiable geological contact.

1- Based on the images and examples on the cache page, identify the type of contact?

2- Is it horizontal or at an angle?

Para validar o FOUND, respondam à seguintes perguntas:

No Local das coordenadas da cache, têm um contacto geológico que é muito fácil de identificar.

1- Com base nas imagens e exemplos na página da cache, identifica o tipo de contacto.
2- O contacto é horizontal ou não?

EN - In order to finish the validation of your find, you have to send me the answers to the questions above either though the geocaching message center service or my profile. Thanks

The most exciting way to learn about the Earth and its processes is to get into the outdoors and experience it first-hand. Visiting an Earthcache is a great outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy.
An Earthcache is a special place that people can visit to learn about a unique geoscience feature or aspect of our Earth. Earthcaches include a set of educational notes and the details about where to find the location (latitude and longitude). Visitors to Earthcaches can see how our planet has been shaped by geological processes, how we manage the resources and how scientists gather evidence to learn about the Earth.
