Geocache Description:

#11-Final Destination . . . Brinkhaven

Welcome aboard as this is your final destination on our Geotrail. We hope you have enjoyed the ride on the Pennsylvania RR also known as the Cleveland, Akron, Columbus (C.A.&C.) Railroad that once occupied our (3) multi-use trails in Knox County. By now you have learned a lot of our local history and how these trail towns flourished as the railroad was built. Brinkhaven was one of those towns in the 1900s and sadly diminished as the railroad began to dismiss operations.

The Mohican Valley Trail

This 4.5-mile trail begins in Danville and stretches to Brinkhaven and ends at the Holmes County line. To search for the last cache in our series you will travel a short distance from cache #10 on the trail to cache #11.  This is another one of our scenic views on the trail which runs along the abandoned right-of-way of the old Pennsylvania Railroad on the eastern edge of the county. .

Before the automobile and good roads came along, recreational day trips of any distance were practical only if the desired destination was near a railroad station. Brinkhaven was a small town to the north of the Bridge of Dreams and was definitely a rail town that flourished from the development of (2) railroads. One being the C.A.&C. Railway and the other the Toledo, Walhonding Valley and the Ohio Railroad known as the "Wally". The first train rolled down the tracks in 1892 connecting small towns and providing cargo and passenger service.

Brinkhaven formerly known as Gann was also known as Mt. Holly. It was laid out in 1838 and the name changed to Gann by the railroad president of the Cleveland, Mt. Vernon and Delware Railroad in honor of George Gann who was instrumental is securing the right away for the railroad. The town included  (2) dry goods stores, (2) groceries, a drug store, harness ship, blacksmith and (2) hotels.  An Iron bridge several hundred feet long spaned the Mohican River which you can still see as you stand on the Bridge of Dreams. If you can see the Iron Trestle Bridge from the Bridge of Dreams, take a picture of it to share and use the hashtag #knoxcountyparkdistrictgeotrail2020, we would love to see the many images of the old railroad bridge.
