The starting coordinates take you to a smart residential housing estate. There is no need to go there. This entrance, at 51 Greenbank Drive, was once the main entrance to the City Hospital, which once housed the Infectious Diseases Unit. The City Hospital closed in 2002, its various departments having moved to other locations over the preceding few years. Peedieduchess has many memories and stories of working there, both as a medical student in the 1970s, when she attended the infectious diseases unit, and as an anaesthetist in the 1980s, when she worked in the ENT and thoracic surgery departments. We always loved going to 'The City', especially as it had the training school for NHS chefs, and the lunch was delicious! The ENT department moved to St John's Hospital in Livingston; thoracic surgery to the New RIE; and infectious diseases to the Western General Hospital.
If you'd ever seen a child with whooping cough, as I have, you would never in a million years refuse vaccination. Let's hope they find one for Covid19! We'll never again say 'but it's only a virus' when someone has a fever, headache and cough.
