Geocache Description:

There used to be a cache in this area but it was archived in 2017. However, it never explained the history of this little area. Welcome to the Silos Park. Probably the smallest park in Alpharetta. You can park at the shopping center. There's a mini silo that has photos and more info.

These grain silos are all that's left of the 1,000 acre Hughes family farm where they raised dairy and beef cows. That's 1.5 square miles to give you an idea of it's size. Across the street where the Kroger is, is where the farm manager's house once stood. These silos were originally built in the early 1950's by the Hughes family. Mr. Hughes, a South Carolina native moved to Atlanta in 1931 and purchased the land from crop growers around 1940 who had been hit hard by the great depression and boll weevals. Mr Hughes also co-owned a regional bus company. These silos stored grain to feed the beef and dairy cows and I read that Mr. Hughes actually lost some fingers in a grinding accident at the silos. Mr. Hughes and his wife lived in Sandy Springs and raised their family there. Mr. Hughes died in 1988 and his widow sold the first 8 acres of property to the Northside Chapel on Crabapple Rd for their funeral home. It is still there today. Slowly, pieces of the farm were sold and developed. The Publix, the shopping center where you parked, lots of homes. Rumor has it that grass in the area grows very well because of all the manure. I do not know that for sure though. I'm sure they never envisioned their silos being the center point of a cache, 70 years after they were built.

This is a nano cache so when I say bring your log roller and tweezers, you might at least keep them handy. The log is very small so please, only log your initials and the date. So, for example if your caching name is "Peter Pan"..log it as "PP". Bring a pen, fine point is best. There are some weeds and plants that you might have to deal with but no bushwacking required. Oh, and if you've never gone inside the Alpine Bakery, check it out. They have the best baked goods ever!
