In 2012, the City of Brampton issued a building permit for 443 Centre Street. The owner of the property began work on a huge 6,600 sq. foot multi-story "monster home", much to the dismay of the local residents.
In February of 2013, the City halted construction, citing that the building exceeded permitted height and lot coverage, then revoked the building permit and ordered the building demolished. The City of Brampton acknowledged that there ware a "technical discrepancy" in issuing the building permit.
This started a legal battle that ran through 2017, The property owner sued the City and several councilors. At the Ontario Superior Court level, the Justice found that the property owner had filed a fraudulent document and fined them $51,000 (a record fine at the time).
Finally in August 2017 the owner agrees to a court order requiring that the structure be destroyed within 120 days. Sometime later the structure was taken down, but the fencing on the property remains and nothing has been built there as of when this cache was published.
An interesting story appeared in 2019, indicating that a replica of the Big Blue House would be built as a "haunted mansion" attraction near downtown Brampton, with the same dimensions and pale blue exterior. Nothing has come to pass of this story yet, but you never know . . .
OPTIONAL: Do you remember the structure here? Did you think it was an eyesore? Did you wonder what it would look like finished? Please add your comments about the Big Blue House to your log.
