Hillsdale County's first modern professional athlete comes out of the small town of North Adams. Playing for seven seasons, from 1948 to 1954, she spent her career at the Fort Wayne Daisies, a franchise of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball league. While she would play professionally as a baseball player, her main sport growing up was basketball, where her team went undefeated for 3 years. Her high school coach took her down for try outs just before graduations and upon return from her senior trip a telegram was waiting for her.
Initially she was bounced around the field, playing wherever needed, until one game when out of pitching staff, she was put on there. The pitching coach went to the side line, gave her some tips on how to stand and such, before sending her out. In that first outing, she would face one of the best hitters in the league. Maxine credits a goofy pitching style, but she had a one-hitter on her first outing and would become one of the league's elite pitchers in the years to come. During her career, she would throw two no-hitters, once in 1949 and again in 1954 both against the Grand Rapids team. She also once threw a 17-inning game, was a 5-time All-Star from 1950 onward, and would go on to throw for 1518 innings throughout her career.
