Chippenham Station is part of the Great Western Main Line, and is situated 93 miles from London Paddington.
The main line was opened in stages, the section from Hay Lane westwards to Chippenham opened on 31st May 1841, the next section was between Chippenham and Bath and this opened on 30th June 1841. Soon Chippenham was also connected to other towns such as Westbury.
In 1858 the station was expanded, and an engine shed and goods shed built. A weighbridge and coal merchants office had been built around the same time as the station.
Both the station and the weighbridge station are now Grade II listed buildings.
