Geocache Description:

A quick park & grab at Old Court near Glanmire village.

The cache is located next to the L3010 as it runs from Riverstown Cross towards Brooklodge and formed part of the scenery on our daily Covid-19 walks during the lockdown. Even the most local of history become of major interest as we were confined to circles of 2km, then later 5km.

There are a few other points of interest:

  • For the curious, there is an infomation board with local walking routes - you will be on an overlapping section of the riverstown loop and Glanmire loop.
  • For the sporty, there is Sars GAA club (founded in 1896) across the road. The club is named after Patrick Sarsfield, the 1st Earl of Lucan.
  • For road historians, you are near Copperalley bridge, a triple-arch humpback road bridge, built c. 1780, carrying road over river. (Rubble stone walls & Segmental arches with cut stone voussoirs) and Riverstown House.
  • For the nostalgic, the empty field nearby (just behind the row of houses to the south) was the site of the well-known John Barleycorn hotel which was very popular for family ceremonies back in the day. Repeatedly vandalised, it was subsequently destroyed by fire in 2006 in the midst of a mixed-use controversial planing application. It has been for sale since 2012 reportedly for over €2million, but nobody has yet taken the bait for the 5.4 acre floodplain site. More recently, there have been calls for the council to purchase it for a regional park.
  • For the thirsty, there is a pub literally staring you in the face.
  • For the hungry, be there before 19:00 for the well-priced daily special streetfood.

The cache is magnetic nano. BYOP. Stealth will be required. There is on-street parking or go for the carpark across the road.
