A new road recently opened filled in "The Missing Link" of the Sydney Orbital Network, finally ensuring that there are no traffic lights between Melbourne and Newcastle. This was a long time coming: the M1 Pacific Motorway (that ends at the listed co-ordinates) was originally planned to continue as the "Lane Cove Valley Expressway", leading to Sydney's CBD via Gladesville Bridge and the Western Distributor, but those plans were cancelled in 1977. Land had been purchased for much of the route, and while there are still pockets that have not been developed enough of the original route was (short-sightedly) sold off for housing, making the original extension prohibitively expensive / unpopular. After the M7 was announced a number of options were investigated as to the best route to complete the road, and the selected option was to tunnel under Pennant Hills Road.
