Geocache Description:

This is a traditional cache situated on the stunning north coast of Northern Ireland overlooking Dunluce Castle.

Dunluce Castle is now a pay as you enter tourist attraction but was once the stronghold of the fearsome Clan MacDonnell. What you see now are the medieval ruins but fortifed castles date back much further than that, as far as the 13th century defensive structure of Richard Og de Burgh. But typical of the local history it passed through several hands as the spoils of war and family infighting until eventually in 1584 it is seized by local chieftan Sorley Boy MacDonnell who swore allegiance to Queen Elizabeth I with his son made Earl of Antrim by King James I. Famously the Spanish Galleon, the Girona, was wrecked on rocks nearby and the salvaged cannons from the enemy ship put to use in the castle gatehouse.

Now the castle stands as stunning ruin atop a craggy hill-top on Northern Ireland's north coast. In 2011 a major archaeological investigation unearthed the lost town of Dunluce which had been sacked in the 1641 Irish rebellion. But no matter the machinations of history one thing is without doubt, this is one of Antrim's most breathtaking artefacts. Stand at the cache location and look out over the pasture, beyond the castle, to the sea beneath the plunging cliffs beyond. History is all around you.

The cache is a micro with just a log. It is outside the area you need to pay to get into, so it is always accessible. Be gentle - it needs no force. Bring your own pen and there is no room for swops but the scenary will make up for that!
