Geocache Description:

For the Public Good...

This Cache has been placed to draw attention to a much missed piece of history: The Holy Apostles drinking fountain.

The drinking fountain at this spot was erected in around 1870 and is a Grade II Listed Building in its own right, despite being linked with the school behind it (now a funeral directors') and the main Church of the Holy Apostles beyond that.

The listing states that the fountain was probably supplied by Boultons of Cheltenham, who were a firm of well respected monumental stonemasons based in nearby Charlton Kings.

Along with the Carving of 'Christ with the woman at the well' and the text below ("Praise god from whom all blessings flow") there is another set of text on the northern face (left side): "The Public are expected to protext from injury that which was erected for the public good".

This text must have worked as, despite being on a prominent road junction, the fountain has stood for 150 years at the date of publication (2020).

The cache is a magnetic container holding just a log sheet - bring your own pen!
