Geocache Description:

2. Tarbock Roundabout

Tarbock Roundabout is believed to be the largest in Europe, with a circumfrence of about a mile. It connects the M62, the M57, the A5300 Knowsley Expressway, the A5080 Cronton Road and Windy Arbor Road.

The junction was built in the mid 1970s with the M57 to the north terminating at the roundabout and the M62 passing beneath. Space was left for the M57 to continue southwards at a later date. The planned extension of the M57 was eventually built in 1995 as the A5300 Knowsley Expressway. The original south to west freeflow links never materialised but in 2008 freeflow links were built between north and east making it possible to drive between the M57 and the rest of the motorway network uninterrupted.

During construction in 1993, evidence of a Roman Farm was found. Then, when excavating the site in 2008 for the extension,, archeologists had to be brought in when 7000 year old Stone Age remains were found. Flints and burnt hazelnuts are just some of the finds pointing to hunter-gatherer tribes living near to Huyton. Other discoveries date from the mesolithic (middle Stone Age) to the Bronze Age periods, around 5,000 to 2,000 BC. Archaeologists also found Roman pottery and tiles, stamped to show they were made for the 20th Roman Legion based in Chester around 167 AD.
