Minard's Mill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

MrandMrsMan: Someone took the container here. An ammo can tethered by a steel cable and railroad spike. After partially destroying the container they were able to get it free leaving the cable and spike. It's not going to get replaced. I hope the new owner enjoys their damaged ammo can.

Geocache Description:

Located at Minard Mills county park a scenic little park perfect for a Sunday drive and perhaps a picnic lunch. Or maybe you'd prefer to dip some worms in Sandstone Creek and try your luck. There's a picnic shelter, a playground and restrooms here for you to enjoy. Dogs on a leash are welcome and the park is open from dawn to dusk.

In 1834 the George Minard family built a sawmill and it was called Minard's Mill. A grist mill was built later at the site of the east bridge and rebuilt in 1883 then later a cider mill was added to that. It was then called Minard Mills, which is still its name as of today. In 1939, George Cheetham the last owner of the mill, tore it down and that year John and Mary Cheetham Sold the land that is below the drive to the county for $1,000. You can still see the millrace in the park and the mill pond across the highway.

There have been several caches here in the past that didn't seem to want to stay put so we're putting this one a little further out. Stinging nettle? Yup. Poison Ivy? Ditto. A few wild rose bushes thrown in for good measure along with a generous helping of mosquitoes? You bet. So unless you're a glutton for punishment shorts and flip flops are probably not suitable for this one. Fortunately for you it's not far off a beaten path so grab your can of bug repellant and come get me. Think you're going to avoid all this by coming in Winter instead? Maybe you'll want to ask DinoDuo about that.

Well, we found out why those past caches didn't stay here thanks to beenhere. It may be flooded in the Spring so there could be mud and even water in addition to the above hazards if you time it right. But don't worry, it's not in the river as the Geocaching map seems to indicate. The map is wrong.
