Geocache Description:

The Rose Shamrock and Thistle might sound like a pub, but it was the largest recorded gold-producer and had the deepest workings in the Upper Ovens gold field. You should be standing in the vicinity of the lower treatment plant of the mine, and whilst over grown, if you poke around you will see old relics and evidence of days gone by.  You can see some fabulous old photos and a re-enactment by some locals - “Heritage Rat Productions rediscovers the Rose Thistle & Shamrock gold mine at Harrietville” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ze3bKrAjek The mine was worked almost constantly from 1860 until 1934. One of the mine's most productive periods was during the 1920s when 46,000 ounces of gold were obtained from 49,000 tons of quartz ore. The word shamrock comes from the Gaelic word Seamrog, meaning “little clover” and of course is associated with the good luck you needed as a miner. Today the hills around Harrietville are a treasure trove of old abandoned mining sites containing relics. hello - here is my next cache at the Rose Thistle and Shamrock mine site which is on Shamrock Creek above the cemetery. Symbolically, the Rose is the floral symbol of England, the Shamrock is the plant symbol of Ireland, and the thistle is the floral symbol of Scotland. The cache is a small camo placed in the visible "wall" in one of a few niches. Its quite green and well protected. Getting a good GPS reading will be difficult in the valley, so mention of this is in the description. Enjoy imagining the past times and given how wet it is, the tough conditions of those early miners. There is a track off Shamrock road into the site that may not appear on maps. Likely only suitable for 4WD, but within walking distance of the cemetary. GPS may take time to settle.
