Geocache Description:

Lake Midway - Glacial Lake

Lake Midway, is a spring-fed 169-acre body of water located along a narrow strip of land along Nova Scotia's westernmost shoreline. Lake Midway is a community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in The Municipality of the District of Digby. in Digby County on Digby Neck. Digby Neck is the western extension of the North Mountain range from the Annapolis Valley and is made of two thick lava flows.

There is rich history rooted at Lake Midway in Nova Scotia, where witches dabbled in the past and ships wrecked along the coast near this lake. While this lake's history may be mired in mystery, there is much more to the area that brings in visitors from all over. Whale watching, picnicking, hiking and cross country skiing are just a few activities that keep people coming back to this quiet spot.

There is nowhere else in the world like the Neck, forged from a lava flow and shaped like the handle of a violin bow at its thickest, least itinerant point, before whittling to a sliver just over 3 kilometers wide that peters out in Brier Island.

The last two million years of Earth history, known as the Quaternary Period have been a wee bit chilly. The land masses of the northern Hemisphere have been periodically covered by large ice sheets. All of the Maritime Provinces were covered by kilometre-thick glaciers as recently as 20,000 years ago (or 20 ka for short).

A glacial lake is a body of water with origins from glacier activity. They are formed when a glacier erodes the land, and then melts, filling the depression created by the glacier. A glacial lake is defined as water mass existing in a sufficient amount and extending with a free surface in, under, beside, and/or in front of a glacier and originating from glacier activities and/or retreating processes of a glacier.
