Geocache Description:

MSQ - Commodore Reed

This cache is located within Willits Cemetery. This cemetery is only open from dawn to dusk by township ordinance. No Nighttime caching

I have zipped by this cemetery many times through the years and decided today to pull of and stop. This cemetery receives its name from the family who settled the area. The Willits name came over on the Mayflower and this family is descendants of those individuals. Moses Willits came to Michigan at the age of 21 and received the land grant for 160 aces in 1837. He used a portion of the proceeds to help build the first school in the township. Commodore Byron L. Reed married Maude Willits, Moses youngest daughter. At the time of their union, he was a Lieuntenant for the US Revenue Cutter Service, which would become the US Coast Guard in 1915. When he retired in 1925, he was the first officer to retire from the Coast Guard with the rank of Commodore. At his retirment, he was the Superintendent of Construction and Repair for the Coast Guard and was stationed in DC.

Commodore and Maude Reed would both pass away on the same day on February 24, 1930 in Phoenix while on route to the Pacific Coast for vacation from their home in Cambria Township. The cause of death was listed as Heart Disease.

PLEASE be mindful of the very small amount of parking at this cemetery (1 Car). If it is occupied, swing around the block and give whoever is at the cemetery time to pay their respects
