Geocache Description:

John Mickle

This cache is located within North Reading Cemetery. This cemetery is only open from dawn to dusk by township ordinance. No Nighttime caching

John Mickle was the first white settler of the township having arrived on October 5, 1835. He lived to a ripe old age (88). He like many of the early settlers of the county originated from upstate New York. His first house was a 19 by 23 foot log cab, unhewn. There he would dwell for three years until upgrading to a square cut black-walnut cabin, which for many years remained the finest in the township. He was an early political office holder for the area and twice served as circuit judge for the area. He was also a founder of the Baptist Church you see next to the cemetery today, with many of its initial meetings taking place in his home.

This is one of the oldest cemeteries in the county been laid out in 1846 with the church actually coming along shortly after. Mickle would donate the land, which he would eventually be buried at.
