In 2011, the East Bay Regional Parks District opened the Tidewater Boating Center as part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline. There was a dedication ceremony on a certain date in March at 1pm - just about the high tide of 5 ft for the day as measured in Alameda nearby. It includes three new buildings: a boathouse for the youth rowing program Oakland Strokes, the headquarters for the EBRPD Recreation Department and a storage facility for the rec department equipment. It also includes an ADA accessible dock and ramp for boats, canoes, and kayaks. It is located off Tidewater Avenue and sits on the shore of the Oakland Estuary in San Leandro Bay.
My family has enjoyed the water access here, including launching 2 adults and 3 kids into a "2-person" inflatable kayak. We paddled around San Leandro Bay, getting a bit stuck in the mud at one point. Would have been best to go at high tide. Enjoying the water here did make us think of a list of other places where we appreciated the water, or would love to one day, including:
Nantucket, MA
Port Orford, OR
Atlantic City, NJ
Charleston, SC
Friday Harbor, WA
Honolulu, HI
Isabel Segunda, Vieques Island, Puerto Rico
Key West, FL
Pago Pago, American Samoa
St. Paul Island, AK
Port Isabel, TX
Duck, NC
Santa Monica, CA
Sand Island, Midway Islands
Alameda, CA
