I’m delighted to create this haunting, historic cache. The place here though, is really deserted. Achill itself is an incredible spectacle, but rather sad. The poor deserted village is not just lovely, its a historic spot too and dates from medieval times. This location is a mile long and has circa eighty deserted stone cottages along a straight stretch of road.

At Slievemore, in Achill, is the nicest example Ireland’s National heritage with these so called ‘booley’ cottages. They were used only partly during the year in good grazing weather, usually in the Summertime. The dwellings belonged to the people of the locality in Dooagh and Pollagh.

Its romantic too and booleying is also called transhumance, two beautifully sounding words. I love the history of the area, the faminesque feel of the place is haunting. I do wonder about my countrymen and countrywomen in an age past.

When you go there you feel a closeness and an understanding of what life upon this barren land must have been like in those days. Could it have been by accident, or by design, that these cottage to cottage structures were cosseted together so closely?

My experience of this mystical place was very spiritual considering the desolation around it. When you do get there then follow in the footsteps of our forefathers and try to imagine what it was like living in those days.
