The Shanlinxi Forest Recreation Area (杉林溪森林生態渡假園區大飯店) is a scenic forest/vacation resort in Zhushan Township, Nantou County. The forest is located at an elevation of 1,600-1,800 meters above sea level with an area of 40 hectares, and consists of fir forests, flower and herb gardens, and several spectacular waterfalls. Monkeys, flying squirrels, and many other kinds of wildlife are frequently spotted in this area. It’s a mecca for bird-watchers, in particular. There is an entrance fee to get into the park, unless you are a resident of Nantou County or are above age 65. This cache is located at the Chinese herb and flower garden, a lovely place for a stroll or a picnic lunch. Lots of tourists congregate here during flower season, though! I highly recommend avoiding the crowds during the day, taking a flashlight/headlamp and looking for the cache at night. Very peaceful, and you'll probably be treated to the sight of flying squirrels in the trees or muntjacs on the banks of the hills, too. This cache used to be located at a windmill towards the left/middle of the gardens, but that structure has been taken down and is being renovated. A new cache has been placed near a large boulder to the side of the walking path not far past the bathrooms. See the spoiler photos for help. And again, this area is FULL of tourists during the day, and it is highly recommended that you come very early in the morning to find the cache, or late in the evening or at night. Please return the cache EXACTLY as you found it and bring your own pen!
