Geocache Description:

Colorado Spirit Quest #528 - Greenmount Cemetery

About this cache: This cache has been updated to a micro container so be sure to bring your own pen/pencil to sign the log. It is outside the cemetery gates so can be found anytime. Enjoy the excellent view of the town of Durango while you're up here. If you have time, feel free to take a drive through the cemetery or park and take a leisurely stroll. Be extra cautious when exiting Cemetery Road because it's tough to see oncoming traffic.

About Greenmount Cemetery: Durango's Greenmount Cemetery dates back to the 1880s and has approximately 12,000-14,000 graves as old as 1857. Its 40- acre spread encompasses sections set aside for fraternal organizations (Elks, Masons, etc.), ethnic groups (Italians, etc.), religious affiliations, and other categories including infants, veterans, and indigent residents of the County. About Colorado Spirit Quest:

Please note: If you are apprehensive about cemeteries avoid this series.

Colorado Spirit Quest is a series of caches placed by many individuals, near cemeteries and historic sites in hopes of paying respect to the many pioneer ancestors that have 'walked' before us. There are hundreds of cemeteries in the rural and mountain communities across Colorado.  This series will introduce you to many of them. The cache pages will provide a virtual history tour of the cemeteries and tombstones. Colorado Spirit Quest is not affiliated with any other 'Spirit Quest' group.  Special thanks and credit are given to SixDogTeam who started the Indiana Spirit Quest in 2004. The idea has rapidly spread into many states. After locating the cache container, take some time to reflect back on the lives of those pioneers and the effort it took to make Colorado such a great state. The CSQ endeavor is an enormous and relentless task and will only flourish if there is a multitude of volunteer cachers willing to place these caches. New volunteers are always welcome! If you are interested in being a part of this project, send an email to the owner of Colorado Spirit Quest #1 - Mountain Passage. Please note that each person that places a CSQ cache is responsible for its maintenance.
