[ITA] Le Rudiste sono fossili molto caratteristici appartenenti alla famiglia dei bivalvi, che per la forma particolare del loro guscio vengono definite aberranti: la loro struttura si distacca sensibilmente da quella tipica del gruppo dei bivalvi, nei quali le due valve della conchiglia sono sub-uguali, e si avvicinano maggiormente alla forma dei coralli e degli organismi tipici di scogliera.
Queste conchiglie vivevano fissate al fondale marino tramite l’estremità di una valva particolarmente sviluppata, a forma di cono diritto o più o meno attorcigliato, mentre l’altra valva, molto ridotta, assumeva l’aspetto di un coperchio mobile incernierato a quella fissa per mezzo di grossi denti e fossette. Per la forma simile a quella degli organismi caratteristici delle scogliere coralline, si ritiene che le Rudiste vivessero in ambienti simili, nei quali diedero origine a vere e proprie biocostruzioni.
Apparse nel Giusassico superiore e vissute principalmente nei mari caldi del Cretacico, si estinsero alla fine di questo periodo nell’oceano Tetide. I loro accumuli contribuirono alla formazione di cospicui depositi, da cui si originarono i “calcari a Rudiste” tipici di questo periodo; per tale motivo vengono considerate ottimi fossili guida per le datazioni del Cretacico. La diffusione delle rudiste è stata notevole, e abbraccia praticamente l'intero pianeta con esclusione della sola Australia.

Osserva ora l'intera parete: i fossili sono caratterizzati da una particolarità interessante e rara: stanno in buona parte in posizione verticale, segno che la loro morte è avvenuta in fase di crescita, da vive. L'erosione qui è operata dalla pioggia e dal vento: come descriveresti il comportamento dei fossili rispetto alla roccia circostante?

[ENG] Rudists are very characteristic fossils belonging to the bivalve family, among which they are defined as aberrant due to the particular shape of their shell: their structure, in fact, significantly differs from the typical one of bivalves, in which the two shell valves are sub-equal, and is closer to the form of corals and other typical reef organisms.
These shells used to live attached to the seabed with the tip of a particularly developed valve, shaped as a cone more or less straight or twisted, while the other valve, very small, assumed the appearance of a mobile lid hinged to the fixed one with the help of big teeth and wrinkles. Due to the shape similar to the organisms typical of the coral reefs, Rudists are believed to have lived in similar environments, in which they built real bio-constructions.
Appeared in the Upper Jurassic and lived mainly in the warm Cretaceous seas, they became extinct at the end of this period in the Tethys ocean. Their accumulations contributed to the formation of conspicuous deposits, that originated the "Rudiste limestones" typical of this period; for this reason, they are considered excellent guide fossils for Cretaceous rocks datation. Rudists are spread all over the world, and are present in the entire planet with the exclusion of Australia alone.
At the listing's coordinates you will be in the Capo Caccia parking lot, where a limestone wall is covered with these fossils.
In order to log this Earthcache as found, you must answer the following questions:
1. In the corner of the parking lot you will notice a well evident couple of Rudists emerging from the rock (use the spoiler photo as a reference): what is their height?
2. Now look at the entire rock wall: the fossils show a rather interesting and rare peculiarity, as they are mostly in an upright position, a sign that their death occurred during the growth phase, while alive. Erosion here is caused by rain and wind: how would you describe the fossils' behaviour with respect to the surrounding rock?
