Plac defilad powstał w roku 1955 wraz z budową Pałacu Kultury i Nauki. Swą wielkością i monumentalizmem stał się sceną dla wielu historycznych chwil w historii PRL. Z trybuną dla gości honorowych, przygotowany był tak, by można było odbierać z niego największe defilady w kraju.

Pod koniec lat 80 plac stracił znaczenie i prestiż. Przez lata zmieniał swoje funkcje – gościł wesołe miasteczko, bazar z halami targowymi, współcześnie pełni rolę zaniedbanego dworca autobusowego.

Dziś ten teren to wielki plac budowy. Rewitalizacja terenu wiąże się z pobliską budową nowego gmachu Muzeum Sztuki Nowoczesnej. Współczesna aranżacja tej przestrzeni to wielkie wyzwanie dla architektów i urbanistów. Skala i forma tego miejsca wymaga subtelnych rozwiązań, szczególnych dla tej lokacji. Mimo zaawansowanych prac, plan przebudowy placu wciąż budzi wiele kontrowersji i sprzeciwu miejskich aktywistów.

The parade square was created in 1955 with the construction of the Palace of Culture and Science. Its grandeur and monumentalism became the stage for many historical moments in the history of the Polish People's Republic. With a grandstand for guests of honour, prepared for the largest parades in the country.

At the end of the 1980s, the square lost its importance and prestige. Over the years it changed its function - it hosted an amusement park, a bazaar with market halls, and nowadays it serves as a neglected bus station. Today, this area is a huge construction site.

The revitalization of the area is connected with the nearby construction of a new building of the Museum of Modern Art. The modern arrangement of this space is a great challenge for architects and urban planners. The scale and form of this place requires subtle solutions, special for this location. Despite advanced works, the plan to rebuild the square still arouses a lot of controversy and opposition from urban activists.
