Geocache Description:

Within Ida Bay State Reserve you will see a few different and varied enviroments, after walking through native forests until you get to the end of the train line you will find that it opens up and becomes more grassland than forest.

All the plants described by Bruni D'Entrecasteaux's 1792 expedition can still be found in the Southport Lagoon area including the Tasmanian floral emblem Eucalptus globulus (blue gum). Swamp eyebright Euphrasia gibbsiae, was thought to be extinct until a very small population of 25 plants was discovered in the conservation area in 1985. It remains the only known population of this species. Equally rare is the endemic heath Epacris stuartii  which is confined to a narrow zone at the top of dolerite cliffs and ledges.

Seasonal use of the lagoon is evident for many bird species. Black ducks, black swans and crested terns are numerous in summer while pacific gulls and hoary-headed grebes use the lagoon more frequently in winter.

Ground parrots are found in the heathland areas and in the forest are endangered species swift parrots, grey goshawks and white-bellied sea-eagles. A pair of breeding wedge-tailed eagles forages in the reserve and the Tasmanian azure kingfisher has also been reported in the area.

The cache is just off the well worn track, you will see all around you what looks to me like plains of button grass.
