Het eerste dier dat we uitzetten in ons ‘safaripark’ is de giraffe. De giraffe is een evenhoevig zoogdier, het langste landdier dat nog voorkomt en de grootste herkauwer. Je herkent een giraffe meteen aan de extreem lange nek en benen en hun kenmerkende vachtpatronen. De wetenschappelijke naam voor de giraffe is: Giraffa camelopardalis. De meeste giraffen worden 15 tot 25 jaar en de lengte is meestal 4 tot 6 meter. Het gewicht is van 550 kilo tot 1930 kilo. Je vindt de giraffe in Afrika. Het verspreidingsgebied strekt zich uit van Tsjaad in het noorden tot Zuid-Afrika in het zuiden en van Niger in het westen tot Somalië in het oosten.
Giraffen leven meestal in savannes en bossen. Als voedsel eten ze bladeren, fruit en bloemen van houtige planten die ze doorbladeren op hoogtes die de meeste andere planteneters niet kunnen bereiken. Op hun beurt staat de giraffe op het menu van leeuwen, luipaarden, gevlekte hyena's en Afrikaanse wilde honden. Het sterke gezichtsvermogen en gehoor van de giraffe waarschuwt voor naderend gevaar. Giraffen kunnen ook heel hard rennen, de topsnelheid die ze bereiken is: 65 km per uur. Ze kunnen daarnaast ook nog zwemmen!
Giraffen leven in kuddes verwante vrouwtjes en hun nakomelingen, of vrijgezelle kuddes niet-verwante volwassen mannetjes. Zij leven in groepjes van 5 tot 20, of soms zelfs 40 dieren. Het wordt dus best gezellig als ze zich in grote groepen verzamelen. Mannetjes vestigen sociale hiërarchieën door middel van "insnoering", gevechten waarbij de nek als wapen wordt gebruikt.

Giraffes browse on the twigs of trees, preferring trees of the subfamily Acacieae and the genera Commiphora and Terminalia, which are important sources of calcium and protein to sustain the giraffe's growth rate. They also feed on shrubs, grass and fruit. A giraffe eats around 34 kg of foliage daily. Their weight ranges from 550 kilograms to 1930 kilograms.
You can find the giraffe in Africa. The habitat extends from Chad in the north to South Africa in the south and from Niger in the west to Somalia in the east. Giraffes usually live in savannas and forests. For food, they eat leaves, fruits and flowers from woody plants that they browse at heights that most other herbivores cannot reach.
Giraffes live in herds of related females and their offspring, or single herds of unrelated adult males. They live in groups of 5 to 20 animals, or sometimes even 40 animals. Males establish social hierarchies through "necking", fighting using the neck as a weapon.
