Geocache Description:

The 14th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

The Upper Hayden school was just SOUTH of Hwy 40 (across Hwy 40 from this cache).  The original district #3 was established in 1881 when Moffat County was still part of Routt County!  The district encompased almost 1/3 of the county and was located in the southwest part.   It was later divided into several districts and by 1908, the Upper Hayden District was the last remaining district.

The white frame school was built in 1901 and since it was near the Dawson Ranch (formally known as the Carpenter Ranch), it was often referred to as the Dawson School.   When the Mount Harris school was built in 1916, the Upper Hayden school closed, and students went to Mount Harris, Windy Point or Hayden.
