Geocache Description:

The 17th of a series of caches planned to be hidden at or near the historic rural schoolhouses of Routt County (RCSH - Routt County School Houses).  See the first cache of this series (GC6QQ71) for a complete and updated list of the ones currently available - but this list will continue to grow as there were 96 schools which served Routt County neighborhoods from 1883 until 1960 when the rural districts consolidated.

There are discrepancies on how Moon Hill got it's name.  Some say it was from the "crescent shaped face of the hill" and others claim it was named after a miner named "Moon", either way, Moon Hill was School District #10 established in 1887.  This present building was built in 1913 and was "one of the earliest frame schools in the county".  It also had a teacherage and a barn for student's horses.  This teacherage and barn burned in 1956.  The school had been annexed into the Steamboat School District four years prior in 1952.

The Moon Hill school has remained a community center and was even used for a time by the North Routt Charter school before they built their building near Clark.
