Geocache Description:

Trees are susceptible to all types of Animal Attacks.  Some examples are deer/moose/elk, squirrels, hares/rabbits, voles, cattle, porcupine and black/grizzly bears. Trees that have been damaged by animals become stressed and become more susceptible to further attacks by insects and disease.

Deer/moose/elk will eat/browse the terminal and lateral shoots/new growth and strip the bark on young trees.
Squirrels will clip /cut the lateral and terminal shoots or remove and hollow out the buds.
Hares/rabbits will cut the lateral or teminal shoots on newly planted seedings. In winter they will gnaw or strip bark above snow level. North 53 38.292 West 122 59.431
Voles also clip the lateral and terminal shoots of seedlings. Larger seedlings they remove the bark and girdle the tree.
Cattle will browse on smaller seedlings/saplings. They also trample, pull and rub causing damage such as broken limbs and scaring.
Porcupine cause damage in the winter when they feed/gnaw on the inner bark. Complete girdling kills the tree.
Bears strip large sections of bark from trees leaving long vertical grooves from their teeth. Claw marks also scar the bole from climbing in the case of black bears and marking in the case of grizzlies.
