Michigan's First Poet Laureate
While the official title may never have been bestowed upon him, during his lifetime he was known by that title. Will Carleton was born in Hudson just east of here and attended college in here in town. It is his poem about the old Poor House in town that helped to elevate him to national prominence. One of the most well-known poets of his day, the notoriety of the Farmer Poet has diminished since his death. With rising fame, he would leave the Hills and Dales, for Boston and then New York City, where he is buried. However his rural life in these hills would guide his work
