Geocache Description:

One for the "BEES" - working bees that is. Plus we need bush and a healthy landscape for the bees too. The Upper Kiewa Landcare volunteers have been working to restore this area in conjunction with DEWLP, the Alpine Shire, Parks Victoria and AGL. The first major activity was blackberry clearing (which huge and valuable help from the prisoners at Beechworth), followed by a plan for restoration. Since 2011, clearing of weeds and extensively plant with new specimens of local flora and maintenance has revitalised the area along with provision of a car park and road access on the top level.   A walking track has been constructed from the major river crossing linking Mermaid Beach with Rockpool and is a great respite in summer. More recently, a track links to the Survey track above the golf course. This has resulted in the whole area being used for swimming, fly fishing, and dog walking providing a family friendly place for picnics and access to the water. GZ is close to the track and has plenty of fun swag for kids. A TB too! Enjoy!

The name ‘Landcare’ evolved in Victoria through an initiative of Joan Kirner, (then Minister for Conservation, Forests and Lands) and Heather Mitchell, (then President of the Victorian Farmers Federation). Heather Mitchell and Joan Kirner were able to launch ‘Landcare’ in a small town in central Victoria in November 1986.  1989 was the year that the not-for-profit organisation Landcare Australia was established. The national formation of the Landcare movement brought farmers and conservationists together to resolve environmental issues. Reference :  https://landcareaustralia.org.au/about/the-landcare-story/
