Back in junior high and high school, my BFF Laura and I had all sorts of our own made-up languages. Like when somebody entered within earshot while each on our respective living room couches with the spiral phone cords stretched to capacity from the kitchen wall, "polka-dotted gymshorts" was the code word to explain an abrupt silence or change in conversation (likely about boys).
We also had our own encryption code that we used to write all of our top secret messages (very loosly defined and yes, still probably about boys 😊) to pass back and forth to each other, that we would fold up in various fancy ways so we'd know if anybody else had read them. At the time, I could write and decrypt these messages almost as quickly and easily as I could the English language.
This puzzle is just a simple substitution cipher. The kind I was grateful for while needing readily available options when filling my puzzle-a-day calendar; which I know many are still working on.
While I do still actually remember about a third of our made-up "alphabet", the ciphertext below is not the actual alphabet we used back in the day cuz hey, thirty years is a long freakin' time to remember stuff like that. Plus I could never risk having any of our secrets revealed should any of those notes re-surface some day!
So with that, please say hello to the newly-dubbed 'Polka-dotted Gymshorts' cipher...
..uh, wait what, oh-no, wherever did I put that legend now?! Hmm, perhaps you can still solve the puzzle without it in the meantime, while I continue looking for it...
