On the evening of 15th July 1794 an assault party from two Revenue Cutters - Resolution and Swan - and the Royal Navy Warship HMS Orestes attempted to board and capture two smugglers' ships in the harbour. A full scale battle erupted at the harbour entrance across The Run. Heavy fire came from the smugglers in Haven House Inn (near the cache site). After three hours of fighting the Revenue men and Marines withdrew.
As darkness fell HMS Orestes opened fire with her cannons and the smugglers dispersed. Early next morning the smugglers ships were captured and taken to Cowes to be broken up. William Allen who lead the raiding party the night before died of his wounds..

This cache is in an extremely busy area so stealth is of utmost importance here
Paid parking available on the Quay although this gets very busy at peak times. There is limited free parking by the shops in Mudeford or more spaces about 10mins walk away in Falcon Drive.
