Ducks Unlimited and the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program worked together to protect Nelson Lake and the surrounding wetland. A weir was installed as well as nesting structures, and level ditching. The weir helps to maintain the water levels, the level ditching creates open water corridors, and floating islands and nesting boxes supplement the natural habitat.
While exploring, please respect the wildlife using the wetland, keep your distance, move slowly, and be quiet.
Some of the wildlife that can be seen here include canada geese, mallards, buffleheads, red necked grebes, greater yellowlegs, tree swallows, black terns, blue winged teals, scaups and muskrats.
The access road is the radio controlled Caine Creek Forest Service Road. Please travel slowly, stay on your side of the road and give industrial traffic the right of way.
